The Dominafuhrer - THE GODMOTHER

Episode 71 - I Wanted To Be In America

Norfolk, November 1956

“And that’s about it.”

I am not sure whether Miss Spiteful was referring to her story or the empty wine glass that she was staring sadly into.

“I was doing well in America, having prepared a list of prospective customers in advance by studying all the gossip columns and subscribing to newsletters that supposedly revealed the secrets of Hollywood and Broadway stars, Wall Street tycoons and Washington politicians. Just like here, a lot didn’t reply when I wrote to them offering my discreet services but enough eager or curious ones replied or turned up to keep me busy during my eleven months there. The FBI soon started investigating me and I thought ‘Here we go again’ but it was just to make that it was safe for J Edgar Hoover to visit me.

As war in Europe got nearer I thought I could sit it out over there and Hoover assured me that, even if America went to war with Germany, I would not be interned or deported. Then, on August the twenty seventh, I got a wire from Sugar in Berlin that the Gestapo had arrested Sapphire and she needed my help. Well, by then every German merchant ship had turned around or left harbour to return to Germany except one. The Bremen arrived in New York the next day, disembarked its passengers and was going to make a fast return across the Atlantic without any passengers. I called every one of influence that I knew and invoked every top Nazi’s name, including the ones who didn’t like me, before they let me on board. But then, the US Coast Guard and Customs would not let us leave and searched the ship for two days, supposedly looking for war materials or to see if the liner could be converted into an armed raider. We were finally let go on the evening of the thirtieth of August and left harbour at speed, with the orchestra playing ‘Deutschland Uber Alles’, to find a Royal Navy cruiser waiting for us just outside territorial waters.

The Captain of the Bremen set off at full speed with the cruiser in pursuit and he managed to lose them in the fog before war was declared on the third of September otherwise we would have been stopped and boarded. Kriegsmarine Headquarters signalled that the new First lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, had ordered the British Home fleet to sea to intercept us and I suppose I should have been flattered; all those sailors looking for little old me!.

The Captain was forced to go further and further north into the Arctic and he even stopped and heeled the ship over to paint the hull and upper works grey on both sides so that we would not stand out against the ice fields. We eventually ended up in the secret Base X, which the Russians had let us establish near Murmansk, on September the sixth; but I still had the problem of getting back to Berlin. The Captain intended to wait there until December when he could be certain of bad weather to cover his dash down the Norwegian coast with a skeleton crew but the Soviets were in no hurry to let the rest of us return over land. They were about to attack Poland from the east, take over the Baltic States and wage war on Finland and did not want even their new allies travelling through the assembly areas for their armies. I will not tell you what I had to do to get put on sealed train to Leningrad like Lenin himself but the Soviet Northern Fleet admiral did give me that nice mink coat that I used to wear in the winter during the war.

When I did get back to Berlin I soon found out that Seraph had been stealing and selling gold and jewellry stripped from people being sent to Concentration Camps or allowed to emigrate but she had made the mistake of taking items that Goering had earmarked for himself. He ordered the Gestapo to investigate and they tracked down Seraph’s fence but Seraph, knowing that they soon would be after her as well, planted some of the items in Sapphire’s apartment, stole her medical records and then tipped the Gestapo off anonymously.

Of course, The Gestapo didn’t believe Sapphire’s protestations of innocence and she had a very hard time in their hands until I arrived. Walter Schellenberg arranged for me and the Fence to meet in an interrogation cell and I soon got out of him that not only was Sapphire not his source of the valuables but he had never met her. Unfortunately he was found hanging in his cell before I could get him to implicate Seraph but it was enough to get Sapphire cleared and released.

I called a meeting of the Berlin Sisterhood and accused Seraph of failing to respond to a call for help from Sapphire and Sugar, Stiletto and Solitaire gave evidence that the call had been made and ignored. The Sisterhood voted Seraph out of office and made me Dominafuhrer instead and, as I could not get back to America, I had to stay and pick up my business again in Berlin.

Then Seraph made a mess of the unit and Walter, remembering how I had interrogated Seraph’s Fence, recommended me to Heydrich.

Sugar would not join and then, as you have heard, fell in love with her Naval Officer who really was a very nice man but Kurt messed that up as well. That nasty little shit really has got a lot to pay for.”

Miss Spiteful yawned, put her empty wine glass on the bedside table, closed her eyes and leaned back on the pillow.

“Wait a minute,” I protested. “When did you start working for the Americans? Was it before or after I joined you?”  Having got Miss Spiteful talking about her past, there were still some questions I wanted answered before I let go off to sleep.

One kohled eyelid opened and a fierce stare fixed on me.

“I never worked for them,” was the response delivered in her threatening voice. “If you can remember what happened in Paris was that I recognised someone I knew in New York who was posing as a Swede but was actually an OSS Agent. He did try to recruit me when I warned him that he was being followed by the Abwehr but I refused because, as a loyal German, I would not do anything that would allow the Ivans to overrun Germany. I did not have any loyalty to the Nazis however and we agreed that, in return for freedom from prosecution for the members of the unit after the war, and that included you and the boys, I would turn over everything I had collected on the Nazis and their war crimes. We also agreed that I could keep in touch with through their office in Stockholm. You must remember the files and all the documents that Von Kreps wanted to get his hands; some of the incriminating documents were the only copies left in existence. Apparently, at Nuremburg, when one that everyone thought had been destroyed was used in evidence, Kaltenbrunner turned to Frank and said ‘I knew that bitch Spiteful had taken a copy of that.’ “

Miss Spiteful’s eye closed and she yawned again but I was not going to give up easily.

“What I remember about Paris is being chased in a car by the Gestapo, being arrested and then tortured by them. Nothing unusual, I know but I would like more of an explanation of what really went on.”

“Another time, Storm,” Miss Spiteful said wearily. “I’m far too tired and it’s possible that I might have had too much to drink. Put the lights out and let us get some sleep tonight.”

I shrugged, leaned over to press the switches on the bedside lights and then in the dark snuggled up close to Miss Spiteful’s silky naked body until my head rested on her soft shoulder and our hands sought the warmth of each others genitals.

Despite my worry that my David might be killed in the next few hours and that I could be a widow by morning, sleep was not long in coming to us both.
